Genoa City in 2011: What Will Happen Next?!

Deep-breathing techniques may be a requirement for Genoa City denizens in 2011 – without them, their blood pressure is sure to soar into the red zone!
“We have a lot of surprises coming up,” promises Y&R’s Co-Head Writer, Scott Hamner. “We’ll be telling stories of our iconic characters, and we’ll bring back beloved characters from the past as they work into the story organically. You can expect a lot of romance. Also, there's going to be those moments of joy and poignancy that are incredibly moving and emotionally satisfying. The audience has a lot to look forward to!”

Diane/Nick:
“Diane came to town ready for anything – and when I say that, I mean she’s set her sights on pretty much every guy in town!” laughs Hamner. "The fact is, Diane is going to find many old attractions rekindled, as well as many new. So I would say that we have a number of relationships here in terms of romantic intrigue. Diane is going to be juggling a number of balls in the air, but how long can she keep them up in the air without dropping them? As we move into January, her involvement with Nick is going to deepen,” previews the wordsmith, but he won’t be the only one warming her bed. There is another guy waiting in the wings who is going to be a shocking rival in what’s going to be a very complicated and interesting triangle for now… and possibly a quadrangle and even a hexagon in the future!”

Billy/Victoria:
Despite Victoria & Billy’s rocky beginning, their marriage will continue to strengthen.
“This couple experiences unexpected joy, but there will be a catalyst that will tie into an umbrella story, and at the same time revisit an iconic storyline that is essential to our show that is going to now take on a contemporary spin. So the upshot is that we can expect some real happiness for Billy & Victoria in the near future, but the complexity to the story is definitely going to be surprising and will obviously lead to complications. Everybody is going to be manipulating and scheming and doing the often well-meaning but destructive things that families do. The twist that occurs is going to involve a missing piece for Billy & Victoria that makes them certain they can look forward to a really bright future,” says the scribe. “It’s a twist that is going to give them a stability that is very surprising.”

Kevin/Chloe:
"It’s not going to be easy for Kevin & Chloe, but this is going to be one of our stories that will have a lot of fun and romance. Expect moving and touching material along with some comedy and some drama. There’s going to be a big question mark about whether they’re going to be able to make it work. There are a number of obstacles that they’re going to face. Trouble looms on the horizon; in fact, there’s going to be an obstacle presenting itself almost immediately after they unite on New Year's that is going to propel their story forward.”

Sharon/Adam:
Once again, Sharon finds herself getting in hot water thanks to a man! The difference, this time, is that Sharon & Adam do bring out the best in each other despite the fact that they both have very profound character flaws.
“Sharon has been torn between the dark and the light. With her decision to support Adam and, in a sense, embrace that dark side of herself, she could lose everything -- including her daughter! So there’s going to be tremendous jeopardy for this couple and for Sharon, in particular, as a result of the choices she’s making now. She only has herself to blame for where life is taking her and she is forced to confront the consequences of her choices. Her decision to throw her lot in with Adam is going to be very dangerous for her,” warns Hamner. “It’s going to come down to the question of keeping custody of Faith. That is what Sharon will be facing in 2011. Leading into January, there’s going to be a real crisis for her...”

Victor:
... Which brings us to Victor. “Victor’s choices are going to have far-reaching, negative results, and there will be extensive collateral damage, similar to the collateral damage that happened when he brought Patty to town,” Hamner previews. "And in this instance, Sharon is going to be the one suffering because of the collateral damage that Victor has created through his scheming and manipulation. This is going to be interesting to watch unfold because Victor has always had a soft spot for Sharon. A series of events that he orchestrates are going to injure Sharon and she is going to feel very betrayed by him. She is going to see how he responds to that dilemma without actually making amends and apologizing because, as we know, Victor never fully accepts that he’s done anything wrong. He will see that Sharon is in crisis, but the question for him will be: How can he intervene without admitting that he’s had any part in playing her into this position? He always has the best interest at heart when he attempts to control the lives of the people he cares about, but inevitably he is blinded by the need to exact revenge on an enemy. His good intentions will put him on a path straight to hell! As is usually the case with Victor, his determination to move heaven and earth to make the world the way he believes it should be will be a recipe for disaster. This time, though, his machinations will blow up in his face and there’s going to be a very bitter and tragic result.”

Jill/Colin/Katherine:
Jill rushes into romance with Colin and her relationship with him will be met with Kay’s disapproval, who doesn't trust the Aussie from the moment she meets him.
"Jill is going to hear from Kay regarding her disapproval, but she brushes off Kay's concern because she believes that Kay resents her being happy and doesn’t want her to find a man of her own. But Katherine is convinced that this guy is trouble. Katherine’s attempt to save Jill from herself is going to make Jill that much more determined to pursue this relationship. This inevitably is going to lead to a family crisis of profound magnitude at the point that Kay and Jill, when they are most at odds, are going to really need each other. Colin is going to play a big part in triangulating those characters.”

NEW WEEKLY POLL (DECEMBER 25 - 31): Did You Enjoy 'Victor's Christmas Carol'?

This past Thursday, The Young and the Restless aired their annual holiday special -- and this year it was "Victor's Christmas Carol"! Victor, who had alienated his entire family and was making his employees work on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, was visited by three figures from his past -- His father, Albert, and his two deceased ex-wives, Hope and Sabrina -- who all helped him to remember his troubled past and why he wanted to become a new man and also gave him a hard and honest look at the present state of his life and how his family was suffering because of the distance between them all. Finally, Colleen, who's heart Victor received after she drowned almost two years ago, appeared as a cloaked figure who's face was hidden in darkness and showed him the dark future Victor and his family faced if he did not change his ways.
Victor did finally see the light and made an attempt to make peace with most of his family on Christmas morning as the episode came to a close. Whether he truly changes his ways and continues to make amends and build bridges with his loved ones remains to be seen, but there is definitely hope to be had for the future!
Did You Enjoy 'Victor's Christmas Carol'?
Did you maybe just think it was okay but not their best holiday special.
Or did you not like it at all and wish you could have seen a regular episode of Y&R instead?

Y&R Renewed For 3 More Years!!!

Good news, Y&R fans: The Young and the Restless will remain on the air for at least three more years. CBS has renewed the top-rated daytime drama series through the 2013-2014 season.

"Hey Young & the Restless fans," CBS posted to its official Twitter account. "TV's #1 daytime drama has been renewed for three more years!"

News of the renewal doesn't come as too much of a surprise, especially since Y&R has ranked as the number one soap since 1988. However, fans still jittery over the cancellation of two CBS soaps in the past two years should now be able to rest a little easier.
According to Deadline Hollywood, the pickup is a "straightforward one," meaning that the show should not have to dramatically slash its budget as it had been required to do for its last renewal in August 2009.

"The Young and the Restless has been the #1 daytime drama on television for more than two decades, as well as an enduring symbol of CBS's success in the daypart," Barbara Bloom, Senior Vice President, Daytime, CBS, said in a statement. "Our audience's beloved characters in Genoa City will continue to flourish under the leadership of Head Writer and Executive Producer Maria Bell and the wonderful storytelling ahead."

CASTING NEWS! GH Vet Joins Y&R!

General Hospital vet Tristan Rogers (ex-Robert Scorpio) is changing channels. The Australian-born actor has been cast in a newly created recurring role on CBS's The Young and the Restless.

A Y&R spokesperson revealed to TV Guide Magazine's Michael Logan that Rogers' character will be named Colin, and there's no word yet on whether the character will have a last name. Most soap fans know that a withheld last name can mean that a character has ties to someone already on the canvas.

Colin is described by the show as "a mysterious and charming stranger [...] who comes to Genoa City with a dark secret and a threatening agenda."

Considering the recent hiring of former As the World Turns star and fellow Aussie, Paul Leyden, it is widely believed that Rogers will factor into the storyline involving Leyden's Blake and Cane, played by another Australian native, Daniel Goddard.

Rogers appeared as a contract player on General Hospital from 1980 to 1992. He returned to the ABC soap for guest appearances in 2006 and 2008. Rogers also appeared as Robert on the GH spinoff, Night Shift, and in a recurring role on The Bold and the Beautiful.

Rogers starts filming his first Y&R scenes later this week, and the actor is expected to first air on December 6.

NOVEMBER SWEEPS PREVIEW!!

“November is going to be a circus on a rim of a volcano with tsunamis on the way,” sums up Co-Head Writer Scott Hamner. “There will be a lot going on [and] it’s going to be pretty wild,” he promises of the secrets and lies that will rock Genoa City in November.

DEACON / NIKKI / VICTOR / MEGGIE:
There is “definitely going to be a twist in [the Deacon and Nikki] story. You can say that the new source of comfort for Nikki is not the bottle… and Deacon is going to figure significantly in her life.
Of course, Nikki isn’t the only one playing right into Meggie’s hands.
“The tension will mount as we see how nefarious Meggie is – and her intention toward Victor is essentially his demise!” the scribe warns. “There’s going to be a very big twist in this story,” Hamner promises. “We want to be like one of those horror movies where the teenager is about to open the door and you’re screaming, ‘No, no, no!’ because you know that’s absolutely the worst possible choice. So, we should be screaming at Victor, ‘No, Don’t go that way!’ We’re going to unravel a backstory for Meggie that is rather unsavory and Victor will be in some jeopardy.”

NICK / SHARON / ADAM / SKYE:
“The conspiracy that Victor and Jack have perpetrated with Adam & Skye’s hedge fund comes to a crescendo, and it causes tsunamis through the lives of everybody.” In the fallout, Sharon realizes she needs some time alone so she goes to New Orleans – and the show is headed there along with her on a special location shoot! – where she re-evaluates where things are going with Nick. She’s going to be followed down there and a showdown is going to occur.
“We have a huge audience there, and we really want to honor them,” the wordsmith says of the soap’s location shoot in the Crescent City, where unfolding events will have a major impact on several lives!
“We’re utilizing the magic of the city to bring a number of our characters to a point of a real crisis and it’s going to dramatically alter relationships as well as fortunes. [Expect a] pivotal moment in the triangle of Nick, Sharon and Adam.”
Are those who expect Sharon & Nick to finally reunite counting their chickens before they’ve hatched?

DIANE / JACK / PHYLLIS:
Diane’s sudden return to town already has certain denizens reaching for their aspirin bottles, but how will they react when they learn the truth about the former model?
“Diane has been pretending as if her life is just fine. Meanwhile, she is in sort of a freefall and we can assume she has made the same kind of mistakes – wherever she’s been – with the people she’s worked for and had relationships with in her time away from Genoa City as the people she burned bridges with in Genoa City. She’s come to town with an agenda to save her butt!”
The vixen has already begun casting a spell on Jack, but he won’t be her only target!
“She’s going to go after the men who have been in her life as well as some new men in order to cover all of her bases. So she’s going to be juggling a number of balls in the air.”

CANE / LILY / BLAKE:
Fans should brace themselves for some big and shocking revelations in this story.
Cane’s latest mad scramble to deal with the secrets emerging from his past becomes even more difficult thanks to fellow Aussie, Blake, who forces Cane into a lie.
“The onion continues to be peeled as far as who Cane is,” Hamner shares. “Blake is going to know things that the audience still doesn’t know about Cane, and we’re going to realize that Cane’s deception reaches much deeper than we’ve ever suspected. We’re going to see an edgier, darker side to Cane, but also the desperateness of a family man trying to hold on to the wife and babies he loves more than anything. There’s definitely danger for the Ashby’s, in an emotional and psychological way, as well as possible physical jeopardy. Cane has got secrets on top of secrets that he’s trying to protect. The revelation where he came from is another deception that Cane & Lily may not survive once she learns he has still not told her his whole story.”

DAISY / LAUREN / KEVIN:
Daisy pops back into town -- just in time for Halloween! -- and instantly creates all kinds of drama!
“This is going to be a fabulous umbrella story that’s going to bring all of our major characters into conflict, teases Hamner. “Daisy is going to be at the vortex of all the controversy, which is going to pit family against family and friends against friends. It’s not only going to involve just Lauren and Kevin, but bring in other characters in a significant way.”

WEEKLY POLL (OCT 16-22): Are You Glad Diane is Back and Stirring Up Trouble?!

This past week on Y&R, Maura West took over the role of Diane Jenkins and the character has been pretty busy in the short time she has been back in town!
Already, Diane has sparred with Phyllis over Jack, learned that Nikki has fallen off the wagon, defied Victor by taking a job from Tucker at McCall Unlimited, announced she is moving back to Genoa City with son Kyle, and got Tucker to cheat on Ashley with her!
This is sure to just be the tip of the iceberg in regards to all the trouble Diane is sure to stir up now that she is relocating to Genoa City! Are You Glad Diane is Back and Stirring Up Trouble?!

Are you absolutely happy to have her back because you love to hate the character and think the recast is excellent?
Are you glad the character is back but you don’t care for the recast?
Were you maybe not a Diane fan before but you are loving Maura West in the role and glad to have her around?
Are you in no way glad to have her back and want her gone ASAP?!
Or do you need to see more of the character and/or the recast before you decide?

Vote now (in the sidebar to the right) and then leave a post here or on the Crimson Lights Facebook profile to let us know how you voted and why!
